Jack Perazella, past president Keep Climbing!
(taken from president's message Jan. 2002)

Another year quickly closing, another APICS season half gone ... the time does fly. It is amazing how the horror of 9/11 is so quickly dimming in our everyday activities and minds. That is not because it is anything less, but more of a testament to the fiber of our country and our people.

The "war" goes on, almost matter-of-factly now, but we know there may be a long way to go before the ultimate objective is achieved. Somewhat like our own lives and careers. There are some serious personal, business and economic stumbling blocks currently in our faces, yet we will persist and overcome. I have often related a little image to people who were facing difficult and discouraging times. It is a means of keeping focused and determined. It goes like this...

Imagine you are standing on a surface covered with a haze, as you might see in an eerie scene in a theater performance. It covers as far as you can see. The only thing visible is a very long flight of stairs leading up into a cloudlike formation. You can stay where you are and feel safe or start climbing the stairs. They are much too high to ascend quickly, so you must just take one step at a time. You know that things will have to be better when you reach the top. If nothing else, you will be able to see so much more and have a better perspective as to which direction you should move.

The task is simple.... just keep climbing the stairs. If you stop, you get nowhere, but as you go up, things continue to clarify. There may be many negatives as well as positives as you proceed. You must remember that each is just a "stair" along the way.
If you stop, you will never reach any intended goal. Just remember that each development. No matter how good or bad you perceive it, is just a part of the process of ultimately finding the way, another stair.

So whether you are stymied by your job or looking for one, having difficulty with friends or family, or just in a quandary about where you are and/or where you are going, start climbing.

The journey itself is the best part of the experience. It is that indomitable spirit that makes us who and what we are as a person, as a nation and as a world. You may not reach the top of the stairs, but will have some fantastic views along the way.
Keep climbing!
